Encounter God’s Mercy

No matter how long it has been, you are always welcome.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is God’s gift of mercy and healing. Through this sacrament, we experience God’s forgiveness, are reconciled with the Church, and receive the grace to begin again.

Known by many names, including Confession, Penance, and Reconciliation, this sacrament is an invitation to return to the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father. Like the prodigal son who returned home, we come before God with humility and trust, confident in His mercy and love.

Why Go to Confession?

While Baptism frees us from original sin and welcomes us into God’s family, we continue to struggle with sin throughout our lives. The Sacrament of Reconciliation restores us when we fall and strengthens us for the Christian life.

The spiritual effects of Reconciliation include:

  • Reconciliation with God and restoration of grace
  • Reconciliation with the Church
  • Forgiveness of sins
  • Peace and serenity of conscience
  • Spiritual healing and consolation
  • Strength to resist temptation and grow in holiness

God’s mercy is a precious gift. We encourage all Catholics to receive this sacrament regularly.

By Appointment

Confession is also available by appointment. Please contact the parish office at (563) 332-7910 to schedule a time with one of our priests.

Has It Been A While?

Many people stay away from Confession because they are nervous, unsure what to say, or feel embarrassed.

Please don’t let that stop you.

Our priests are happy to help guide you through the sacrament. Whether it has been six months or sixty years, God’s mercy is waiting for you.

How Do I Go to Confession?

  1. Examine your conscience and prayerfully reflect on your sins.
  2. Enter the confessional and greet the priest.
  3. Confess your sins honestly and completely.
  4. Receive a penance from the priest.
  5. Pray an Act of Contrition.
  6. Receive absolution.
  7. Complete your penance and give thanks to God.

First Reconciliation

Children ordinarily prepare for First Reconciliation during second grade as they prepare for First Holy Communion.

Preparation includes:

  • Formal catechesis through St. Joan of Arc Catholic School or parish religious education
  • Regular participation in Sunday Mass
  • Parent involvement in sacramental preparation
  • Parish-led activities focused on the sacrament

If your child is older and has not yet celebrated First Reconciliation, please contact the parish office so we can help determine the appropriate preparation process.
